Moringa is a Complete Protein Plant!

What is protein?

Our bodies require adequate amounts of macronutrients–fat, protein, and carbohydrates–so we can feel well, increase and maintain strength, and have strong immune systems.  Protein is one of three essential macronutrients, and you might be surprised to learn that Moringa is very dense in protein. Not only do Moringa leaves contain protein at “nearly 30 percent by dry weight,” but the plant provides all essential amino acids! Very few plants provide complete protein, so Moringa really is a superfood in a number of ways! Continue reading to learn more about the basics of protein and how consuming Moringa can provide you with one of the most nutrientdense servings of protein out there.

Why is protein important?

When the average person thinks about the benefits of protein, they probably think about its role in building and maintaining muscle mass. Protein is actually a crucial “building block” for tissue cells, hormones, enzymes, hair, and nails. In fact, just about every level of the body’s physiology requires protein.

Protein is an energy source that also helps with weight regulation, helping you to stay satiated and full throughout the day. Just as important, it has a vital role in keeping the immune system strong.

How much protein does a person need each day? The average adult needs a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight per day, according to the National Academy of Medicine. If a person weighs 140 pounds, for example, she needs to consume at least 50 grams of protein per day. Daily requirements increase if a person is pregnant, breastfeeding, or is an athlete or bodybuilder.

Protein is crucial for building and repairing tissues, making enzymes and other body chemicals, and is a building block for just about every cell in the body.

What is a complete protein?

Where does protein come from? Meat is high in protein, as are dairy products. One important caveat about relying on meat for your protein needs is that you might over-consume fats and increase your risk for several kinds of diseases and cancer, especially by eating red meat. Eggs are a very good source of protein if consumed in moderation. We recommend limiting or even excluding meat, looking instead for plant-based sources for the bulk of your macronutrients. Legumes, soy, nuts, grains, and other plants contain protein, and they really are quite delicious too!

Not all food sources of protein are created equal, however. While it’s not difficult to find plant-based foods that are high in protein, few plant-based sources are complete in protein. There are twenty amino acids, but the body lacks the ability to create nine of them. So we have to get those nine essential amino acids from food sources. As was already mentioned most plants don’t contain all nine essential amino acids, which is one reason why it is crucial to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Moringa is one of those unique plant-based sources that is a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids.

Moringa is PACKED with Nutrients!

Moringa leaves provide more than just protein. They are high in essential micronutrients and antioxidants: calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Phytochemicals in the leaves appear to work alongside antioxidants to reduce inflammation in the body. It’s no surprise that scientists and doctors around the world have turned to Moringa as a solution for chronically malnourished groups.

VG Wellness has several formulations of Moringa so you can consume this superfood regularly, either in the form of a tea or supplement. Be sure to read more on topical uses of Moringa.
